Ballyrafter House
Address: Lismore
County Waterford
Ireland
Description:
Ballyrafter House, an unusually attractive country residence, was built in the early 1800's for the Duke Of Devonshire's estate. A major refurbishment has carefully preserved the old world charm and character of Ballyrafter, while ensuring every room has an en-suite/private bathroom and modern conveniences like direct dial telephones. The Irish Tourist Board has given Ballyrafter House a 3 Star Rating.
Facilities:
The Reception Hall sets the tone with its polished mahogany wood and plush carpet. There is a comfortable resident's lounge where before dinner aperitifs can be enjoyed in front of the open log fire. And the dining room with its large bay window overlooks the spacious Oak and Beechwood lawned gardens. At night the window tables overlook the spectacularly lit towers and bastions of Lismore Castle - a fairytale made real.
But, this is a country house. Though elegant, Ballyrafter offers, in the words of one writer, "unpretentious comforts". The place does not feel stuffy, but warm and welcoming. The sun room/conservatory and lounge bar contribute to this feeling of peaceful relaxation. So does the excellent Restaurant featuring local foods. Breakfast is included with all bookings.
Yours hosts, Joe and Noreen Willoughby, are happy to share their local knowledge, love of cooking and fishing, and their sunny home.
The bedrooms are often very spacious - whole suites, in fact, can be reserved. Each bedroom is individually appointed with modern facilities and splendid views of the gardens. All rooms have ensuite/private bathrooms (a few with shower only) and Direct Dial phones. There is central heating throughout, yet each room has its own thermostat so that guests can individually set the temperature of their room. We have just recently finished our new extension of five new bedrooms and also a new courtyard function suite whicch caters for parties and weddings.
