Monstrous glaciers, clean streams, huge lakes and ice cages, picturesque roads as well as many other landscape advantages for many years have been making st. Gilgen a favourite repose destination for many VIPs. One of them is Helmut Kohl, who for the last 16 years has been regularly visiting the town to delight himself in the beauty of the nature and to gain new energy so necessary in daily contact with the reality of German politics.Wolfgangsee lake stretched in the surface of 13 square km. It is located on the latitude of 538 meters above the sea level and in some places reaches the depth of 114 meters. Picturesque mountains peaks surround the lake: Zwolfernhorn – 1522 m a.s.l., Schafberg 1783 m a.s.l., Drachenwand – 1187 m a.s.l.St. Gilgen (Salzkammergut region) is full of ski lifts and local mountains are a perfect place for the sport. Within a two-hour drive from st. Gilgen there are two airports which enable quick reach to the town.
Salzkammergut region is perfect with its snow and skiing conditions, though the slopes are very sunny. The snow lies on the slopes for a very long period – up to May. The Zwölferhorn area is perfect with its snow conditions, allowing skiing in deep snow. You can feel safe and secure when sliding down the slope as st. Gilgen is a base for a mountain safety guard centre.
Two snowboarding schools are based in Salzkummergut area as well as there are practice slopes for snowboarders.
The most famous lifts in the st. Gilgen area are: Zwölferhorn (camera view) – at reaching the top there are 9 km of routes at the guests disposal, including: 5 km of medium level of difficulty and 4 km of easy routes. The skiers may also use 2 lifts: line and belt.Gaissau – Hintersee – there are 40 km of routes altogether, including 1 km of advance route, 19 km of medium difficult route and 20 km of easy routes. There are 9 lifts in the area (6 belt lifts and 3 chair lifts). The longest route is 2327 m. the skiing conditions are perfect here.Active Center Postalm – altogether over 20 km of routes, of which 1 km of advanced, 8 km of medium difficulty, and 11 km of easy routes. The guests may use 7 lifts – 6 belt lifts and 1 chair lift. The sliding area is stretching at the latitude between 1200 m and 1900 m a.s.l.
