The hotel boasts an electric presence. Built by Joseph-Arthur Godin in 1914, the building was the first poured concrete structure in North America – a leader in its time, as it is again topday. The feeling of concrete has been kept by the Godin team, who felt that the raw energy of this basic building block lent a fabulous feeling to the interior spaces. So some ceilings and walls are simply concrete left unfinished, imparting a mood of the contemporary and a hint of the historic.
In fact, throughout the Godin, the mood is a mixture of the old and the new. The design team kept the evocative inheritance of the basic building. This “old” building’s beautiful turn-of-the-century staircase, symbol of a bye-gone era, has been kept and in fact enshrined behind glass, firmly moving forward into the 22nd century. Alongside the original Godin, a new building, also housing guestrooms, soars cleanly into the sky. An indoor bridge, high above the restaurant, links the two.
